Children’s Program Leader
The Children’s Program at Transition House is seeking a creative, compassionate and responsible leader to join our team!
Children’s Program meets in our Family Homeless Shelter Monday through Friday, from 5:00 to 7:00pm, to offer homework help, literacy opportunities, and educational activities for resident children ages 4-12. This position is for 4 nights per week (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday), with one weekend field trip per month. The children’s program leader will be responsible for planning and implementing 1-2 activities per week and assisting other team members on the additional evenings. We use technology and children’s literature as tools to teach relevant life skills such as managing emotions, fostering positive relationships, making healthy food choices, and self-expression, and much more. A theme of the month inspires the book read aloud by the leader, which sets the stage for discussion and a hands-on activity. Once per month, the leader will help organize and supervise a field trip to a community organization (such as the zoo or The Natural History Museum) to supplement our theme.
Our FSC Childcare takes place from 7:00pm-9:00pm in our Family Support Center. Parents in our program and from our community participate in many classes and activities to help them find employment, housing, and other opportunities for growth and self-sufficiency. During this time, their children participate in our childcare program. The childcare leader is responsible for caring for children of all ages with the support of volunteers. Responsibilities include planning and implementing activities for a variety of age groups, arranging the childcare environment in a way that is safe, warm, inviting, and practical for the children in care each evening, and supporting children’s social emotional needs.
Additional Children’s Program and childcare tasks include record keeping (rosters, follow up reports, behavior documentation), health checks (making sure children only attend if they are physically healthy, lice checks, etc), communication with families, and general cleaning and organizing of the children’s program spaces (classroom, library, cabinets, etc). The children’s program leader will also be responsible for maintaining positive relationships with children’s program volunteers and ensuring that the volunteers enjoy their time with us and adhere to Transition House policies.
